Winter Skin Survival Kit

While we’re all getting excited by the thought of snow, bundling up and the festive season, our skin is less excited for the harshness of Winter. The bitter cold air, harsh winds and the cranked up indoor heating all wreak havoc on our natural skin barrier. Hello, dry, flaky cracked skin.

Protect the natural barrier of your biggest organ this Winter with your own perfect Winter Skin Survival Kit to protect yourself against the elements. A SOS Kit for Skin if you will.

Face Oil

Sometimes face cream just won't cut it. Swap your moisturiser for a face oil. It has the benefits of being all natural and utilising the powerful healing properties of natural botanicals.

A few natural botanicals to look out for:

  • Rosehip Seed Oil - Good for dry, mature and damaged skin. High in vitamin E & A and essential fatty acids. For firmer, smoother and younger skin.

  • Blue Tansy - Antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory to soothe dry, itchy, inflamed or stressed skin.

  • Calendula Oil - Used for healing and tissue regeneration, red inflamed skin, acne, rashes and eczema prone skin.

  • Jojoba Oil - light textured and deeply penetrating oil. Re-balances oily, problem skin and helps to nourish and repair dry and damaged skin.

Contrary to popular belief, face oils work on all skin types. Yes, even oily skin. By working with your skin’s natural oils, instead of stripping them off, the skin is kept balanced and healthy.

The trick with face oils is to apply on a damp face for optimum penetration, whether that be just after cleansing or dampening with a calming toner such as rose or lavender water.

We love Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil, £24.

The Basics

Ditch the harsh, striping cleansers for oil or mild creamy cleansers. Going back to basics with those daily skincare essentials helps to maintain a healthy barrier.

Our top pick is the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, £9. The simple formula with hyaluronic acid and ceramides comes highly recommended by dermatologists for those with severe problems like eczema and dermatitis. It’s been a godsend for my problem skin.

Lip Balm

It’s safe to say the lips definitely take the brunt of the extreme temperatures come Winter. As the only piece of skin on our body’s that doesn’t secrete oil, they are even more prone to drying out. Protect your pout with regular lip balm applications and avoid drying petroleum-based products in favour of natural formulas.

Crusty lips are never a good look, so it may be time to switch out the matte lipsticks in favour of something more forgiving, like a tinted lip balm. Our favourites are by far the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments, £19.50, in Honey and Petal. They aren’t as sheer or glossy as you’d imagine, imparting a nice moisturising and comfortable wash of colour. There’s even a berry toned one for the lover of a seasonal lip look.

Hands

When you think about it, your poor hands go through A LOT. In and out of hot water, fully exposed to the outdoor elements and all those festive manicures too. Your nails and skin are sure to be suffering.

Hand cream should be a non-negotiable this time of year to protect against chapped skin. Bonus points if you use a hand cream with SPF. Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean the sun’s rays aren’t as harmful as in Summer. If you want to amp it up further, a layer of cuticle balm will help to protect your delicate nail beds from drying out. We recommend the classic Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream, £5.99.

If your goal is longer and stronger nails, having healthy nail beds will get you there quicker.

Bronze and Glow

Pale, dead looking skin is one of our pet peeves this time of year. We’re missing that golden glow of Summer.

Arm yourself with a warm toned cream bronzer this Winter to warm up your complexion in a natural way since too much cool toned contour is going to make you look like a literal corpse. Not cute now that Halloween is over. Combine that with a glowy illuminator to wear under makeup or solo and nobody will be asking you if you’re sick or tired the next time you try to go minimal with makeup.

The NiNi Organics Glow Illuminator, £24.95, has the dual benefit of a bronzy glow and powerful natural hydration.

With your Skincare SOS Kit, you’ll be armed for whatever Winter throws at us this year.
