Beauty sleep: there’s no denying that a good 8 hours has you waking up with a glow. But what if we could push the boost button on our beauty sleep?

I’m lazy when it comes to beauty routines – or shall we call it “low maintenance” for the sake of it sounding better. Most of us love the idea of self-care, but the reality is that we're often constantly torn between our beauty regimes or doing things more productive or more fun. That leaves zero time during the day to primp and preen. Lightbulb moment. Why not do it overnight? You’re asleep anyway, why not let your beauty products do all the work while you rest?

With our busy lifestyles, the choice of overnight products has widened. Your body is naturally in repair mode during the night and ensuring that your sleep routine is beauty optimized could be the saviour for all fellow lazy girls….

OVERNIGHT HAIR MASK

Hair definitely gets the short straw of being the last beauty priority. With overuse of heat tools and the irresistible convenience of dry shampoo, it’s probably crying out for some serious help.

In fact, in my 22 years, I’ve used a hair mask a grand total of about two times and I used to have long hair down to my hips. I can confirm that my ends looked as disgusting as you’re probably imagining. Hair masks are back on my radar, but my rushed morning shower offers hair little time to soak up all the benefits of a quick treatment. Adding in an overnight hair mask once a week under a shower cap can give your hair some much-needed R & R. A quick wash out in the morning and you’ve got soft swishy hair. Some might call it a miracle.

Try Bumble and Bumble While You Sleep Overnight Damage Repair Masque, £40, or simply DIY your own natural concoction.

SLEEP MASKS

Gone are the days when you’d have to set aside 10-20 mins of your life to sit and feel your face turn to stone. Sleep masks have arrived in full force. This is one beauty trend that we can thank the always advanced South Koreans for as it slowly arrived on our shores over the past couple years. The idea is to soothe, hydrate and treat the skin overnight while it’s naturally in its repair mode. Eight hours of treatment sure sounds better than 10 minutes. You’ll wake up plumped, smoothed and soothed.

With the number of options growing, there’s one to suit every skin type. Try the gorgeous cult Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, £40, for an all-round skin pleasing treat or The Body Shop Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Night Mask, £12, for more problematic skin.

SILK HAIR WRAPS

I’ve always been a person that slept with their hair down until recently learning how bad that is for your skin. Hair down = oil transfer = spots. But tying it up also equals damage and breakage for the hair. Balance the two and keep both your hair and skin happy with a silk hair wrap. The soft fabric will prevent frizz and breakage acquired from abrasive pillowcases and keep your hair off your face. And on a vein note, it also makes you look incredibly luxurious while you sleep. Think 1920s Hollywood actress on a glamorous holiday to the Italian coast. Definitely better than the wild bedhead we’re used to waking up with.

The SILKE London Hair Wraps, £45, are a luxe option whilst the Kitsch Satin Sleep Cap, £12.37, provides a budget yet still stylish alternative.

EXFOLIATE

Everybody loves that soft feeling after a good scrub but so many of us forget to actually work it into our routines. Plus, the harshness of physical exfoliants are damaging for the skin. Overnight exfoliators offer a ‘too good to be true’ result: waking up with a glowy and healthy complexion that feels baby soft. And all without aggravating sensitive skin. Acid exfoliators work to gently slough off dead skin by loosening the “glue” that holds them together. Skip the acid toners and harsh treatments for a gentler overnight serum approach. Waking up with model-like skin might not be so unrealistic after all.

Hold out and wait for the latest cult brand Drunk Elephant to hit the UK later this year. Their glycolic night serum will be worth it. In the meantime, the Pixi Overnight Glow Serum, £26, will save you some $.

And that’s not all. Why not switch your night cream for a powerful botanical face oil like rose hip? Add foot cream and socks before bed. Use silk pillowcases for crease and wrinkle free skin. Whip out a humidifier to keep your skin moisturised overnight.
